About UpHive

Started in 2016 with WordPress. Still shipping, now with AI.

UpHive wasn't planned on a whiteboard — it grew out of a decade of real client work, one project and one platform at a time. Here's how that happened, and what it means for what gets built today.

Our story

A decade of client work, not a pitch deck

UpHive started in 2016 as hands-on freelance engineering — WordPress sites for small businesses that needed something better than a template. There was no funding round and no account-management layer between the client and the code. Just direct delivery, one project at a time.

That discipline is still how UpHive operates today. The stack has changed enormously — from WordPress and Joomla to React, AI-assisted development and modern cloud infrastructure — but the way of working hasn't: senior engineering, directly on every project, no hand-offs.

The journey

How the stack grew, one real project at a time

Not a roadmap drawn up in advance — every platform below was added because a client needed it, in the order those projects actually came in.

  1. 2016

Where it started: WordPress, Joomla, Drupal

UpHive began as hands-on freelance engineering — building real sites for small businesses on the CMS platforms that actually ran the web. No pitch deck, no seed round. Just client work, delivered directly.

    • Joomla
    • Drupal
  2. 2017

    Going deep on WooCommerce

As client requests shifted from content to commerce, WooCommerce became a specialty — product variants, checkout logic, and the plugin ecosystem behind a large share of the web's independent stores.

  3. 2018

Meeting clients on whatever platform they'd already chosen

Not every business needed WordPress. Shopify, Wix, Squarespace and Duda projects meant building fluently across the platform that actually fit a client's budget and team — not defaulting to one.

  4. 2020

Beyond the website: marketing and content operations

Client needs grew past the site itself, into how teams actually managed leads and content. HubSpot and Contentful joined the toolkit for businesses that needed structured operations, not just a homepage.

    Building the retention layer

A site that converts once isn't enough. Klaviyo, Mailchimp and MailerLite integrations became standard on nearly every eCommerce build — the email flows that turn a first purchase into a repeat one.

  6. 2024

Standardizing on React, extending to mobile

New builds moved decisively to React and Next.js as the default. React Native extended that same codebase and design language to iOS and Android for clients ready to go mobile.

Building with AI as part of the process

Claude Code and Lovable became part of the actual build workflow, not a side experiment. Railway, Trigger.dev and Fly.io became the default way to ship AI-backed features and background jobs without managing servers by hand.

What that history means for you

Proven foundations. Modern defaults. A genuine AI-era edge.

Proven foundations

Ten years of production work across WordPress, WooCommerce, Shopify and the platforms that still run most of the web's content and commerce.

Modern by default

Every new build defaults to React, Next.js, TypeScript and Tailwind — typed, componentized and fast, whether it's a marketing site or a full product.

Building with AI, not just talking about it

Claude Code and Lovable are part of the actual build process today, alongside modern infrastructure like Railway, Trigger.dev and Fly.io — brought in because they genuinely speed up delivery.

Who's behind this

Small on purpose

UpHive is intentionally two people. Every project is led directly by one of us — never routed through account managers, and never handed off to a junior partway through.

What clients say

Trusted by the people who hired us

They rebuilt our WooCommerce store from the ground up and it just works — faster checkout, far fewer support emails about broken carts, and it's been solid since launch.

Sarah M.

eCommerce store owner

What stood out was how little hand-holding it took. We described the problem, they came back with a plan, and every milestone shipped on time — no surprises.

David R.

Founder, professional services firm

Our site finally feels like it matches the quality of the business — clean, fast, and easy for our own team to update without calling a developer every time.

Priya K.

Marketing lead, corporate website client
